How to Make Money on Shopify
You want to set up your own webshop but you have little time, you have little or no knowledge of any programming language and you do not want to be involved with technical aspects such as (security) updates and finding a hosting provider? Shopify perfectly meets all these criteria. If you are like how to make money on Shopify then here are the steps for it. Learn how to make money on shopify!
Tip 01: Select system
There are several solutions to get your own online store online. Which option you choose depends, among other things, on how much you want to pay for it, how much time you want to invest in the web store, the technical knowledge you have, the possibilities and flexibility you want and the size of the web store.
Preferably also think of the longer term. Roughly we distinguish two large web shopping systems. With the first system, you can tailor your web store (or have it made to measure), usually based on open source software. One of the best known and most powerful programs is Magento Community Edition. Another popular product is PrestaShop that is slightly more user-friendly than Magento.
The second option isso-called hosted solution, or SaaS (Software as a Service). Here you conclude a subscription with a provider of web shops. That is a lot easier, but it gives you a bit less freedom.
Tip 02: Shopify
In this article we will work with the Canadian, English language Shopify and show you step by step how to set up your own web store with this SaaS service. Shopify is very popular. Not surprising, because the system turns out to be user-friendly, is safe and continuously evolving with numerous extensions.
Shopify is also quite affordable. For an amount of 29 dollars (approximately 21 euros) you have unlimited bandwidth and you can place an unlimited number of products in your store. You are limited to 1 GB of storage space, but that will not be a problem so quickly. Keep in mind that on top of this subscription amount transaction costs of 2% are charged on every product sold.
With the more expensive subscriptions (79 and 179 dollars per month) this percentage decreases to 1% and 0% respectively. If you want to keep it small (up to 25 products), you can still consider the Starter formula: it costs $ 14 (approx. 10 euros) per month, with a further 2% transaction costs.
Tip 03: Free trial account
You can work with Shopify for free and without obligations for fourteen days. The biggest limitation is that your shop can only be reached during this trial period for those who know the password. Go to the website and fill in the name of your store at Start your free 14-day trial today, as well as your e-mail address and a password. You can change the store name afterwards, but remember that an attractive and easy-to-remember name is important. Then click on Create your store now : Shopify will start immediately and a little later you can click Take me to my store . Shopify then asks you to fill in a number of details, including your address details and the nature of your store.
Tip 04: New product
At the top right, the View your store button takes you to the frontend. This is the web shop as your visitors will see it. Make a note of the password that you see at the top right: you will need that if you want to visit the store (no longer registered). Your store is still completely empty, except for a sample product.
We will immediately change that, but of course we have to go back to our dashboard. You do this by clicking View your admin at the top. Then select Products in the panel on the left and click on Add a product. Incidentally, note that you can also choose Import products here: that is especially useful when you already have a product list ready in csv format. Via the link sample CSV template you get a nice idea how this file should look like. We keep it here on a limited and manual input.
Tip 05: Product options
You will now have the opportunity to enter all kinds of details for your (first) product. These include a title, description, type, producer, price and weight. You are not obliged to fill in all items. In any case, the option This product has multiple options is interesting. If you place a check mark here, you can add various product options, such as Color, Size, Material and Style. Via Add another option and Create a new option it is also possible to add your own options.
You can then assign different values to each chosen option. You enter it in the corresponding field, separated by a comma. It is also possible to link your product range to a rudimentary inventory. In Inventory Policy pick up Shopify tracks this products’ inventory, where you immediately indicate how many items are in stock. Place a check mark at Allow users to purchase this item, even if it is no longer in stock, if you also want to have orders executed during (temporary) depletion of the stock.
Tip 06: Product collections
A matching image makes the product immediately more attractive. Add a suitable image to the Images section. Other interesting headings are Tags (handy to categorize your product) and Search Engines. With the latter you enter information that makes it easier for search engines to find your product (page title, meta tags and url of the web page).
Also useful is the Visibility section, in which you indicate whether or not the product should already be visible in your store. You can also enter a specific publication date here, so that the product can only be put up for sale from then on. It is also possible to place your products in collections via the Add to collections button. You have to create that first and you do that by opening in the left-hand panel Collections. Do not forget to record your changes with Save.
If you are planning to create a second, third etc. product that resembles the previous product, use the Duplicate button to add the product much faster.
Tip 07: Install theme
You have already provided your store with some products, but of course you want to sell as much as possible. Then your store has to look attractive, and that’s possible thanks to ready-made themes. Open the Themes section in the panel on the left. You now get an overview of the installed themes. For now, it appears that there is only one: the standard theme launchpad. We will first show you how to install more themes and then how you can adapt the ultimately chosen theme even more to your wishes. Click Visit the Theme Store at the top right.
You now end up on a site where you can choose from dozens of themes. We prefer to keep it free and so click on Free. Optionally, you can zoom in even further with additional criteria such as Filter by industry and Filter by features. For example, the combination of Free and Electronics yielded two (usable) themes. We opted for the Kickstand theme (with two styles). Click on the theme and then click on Get Theme, after which you either publish as my shop’s theme or install as an unpublished themeclicks. We opt for the latter: you can ‘publish’ it in your store at any time.
Tip 08: Publish Theme
In the Themes section you will now also see the newly installed theme. Just click on Publish to activate it, where you normally have the choice to replace your current theme or install this new theme as your mobile theme so that visitors only see it from a mobile device.
Return to your Dashboard and choose View your store to view the result. This ‘control’ is not unimportant, since unexpected changes may occur depending on the chosen theme. For example, in the Kickstand theme, we no longer saw our test products on the opening page. Apparently we had to put them in a Collection first and add a short description to the Theme settings.
That is actually good, because that is exactly the page you need to put a theme even more to your own needs.
Tip 09: Edit Theme
So go to Themes and click on Theme Settings. What you can adjust exactly depends on the selected theme. Handy is in any case the button Preview in new window: you will immediately see the result of your changes without having to switch to the ‘real’ frontend.
In most cases you can upload your own logo in the Header section: keep in mind the optimal size and size indicated (first press the Save button to see the result in the Preview window). In any case, we advise you to go through all themed items. You may also find the section Translations where you can quickly replace specific text by their Dutch version (if you prefer).
We will further discuss translations in tip 15. You can also edit a theme much more thoroughly, via the link Template Editor. However, this approach requires a thorough knowledge of HTML and CSS.
Tip 10: Web Pages
In a shop, of course, everything revolves around the products you sell, but you cannot do without a few fixed web pages, in which you for example present your shop to the visitors and communicate the sales conditions. Navigate to the Pages section for this. Chances are that your theme has already built in one or more standard pages. You can click on these pages to edit them, for example to make the texts in Dutch. You do this in a stripped-down HTML editor.
This makes it possible to format text (bold or italic, for example), to align, to sum up or to provide links and columns. You can even upload a photo or video file. Furthermore, just as with product pages, you can enter information for search engines and indicate whether you want to make the page immediately visible to your visitors. You will see a handy preview with the Preview Page button.
Tip 11: Basic settings
You have the layout well done, you have some informative pages ready and the visitors can search in your product range. Nice, but you are not really there yet: you still have a few institutions of more ‘administrative’ nature. A few important options can be found at Settings, at the bottom of the Dashboard panel. First of all, you check the data that you find in the General section, such as the title of your opening page, your e-mail address, the physical address (not unimportant with a view to invoicing).
You also enter the time zone ( GMT + 01: 00 Amsterdam ), the measurement unit ( Metric system ) and the currency ( Euro ). You fill in what you deem necessary. Here you can also link to your Google Analytics account if you have that. At the bottom you can still read the password of your webshop. However, as long as you stay with a free trial subscription, do not let this password disappear.
Tip 12: Shipping & VAT
You may not be able to fill in the correct VAT rates for the countries where you want to offer your products for sale. You first add those countries via the Shipping section. Actually, this section is meant to be able to charge customized shipping costs per country.
It is even possible to provide different shipping costs via the Add shipping rate button, depending on the sales price or the weight of the package. Good to know is that for each country you add here, you can also include an adjusted VAT rate in the Taxes section. You immediately indicate whether the VAT should automatically be included in your prices and whether you want to have VAT deducted from the shipping costs. It is also useful to charge a different VAT rate per country for certain product collections. You click on Add tax override, choose the target country and the collection and indicate the desired VAT percentage. Confirm your changes with Save changes.
Tip 13: Payment methods
Of course, your customers also have to pay the ordered products. You will therefore have to provide one or more payment methods. You can find that in the Checkout section. By default you can already use PayPal, but if you want to pay customers with credit cards or a payment system such as iDeal, you have to join a so-called payment gateway. Shopify refers to payment service provider Skrill for this. Once your account is activated, you only have to open the drop-down menu at Select a Credit Card Gateway and select Skrill (Moneybookers), after which you enter the corresponding Merchant Email and Secret Word.
To do this, you have to first knock on Skrill yourself. Go to the website, open the Business menu, click on the arrow at Industry Sector and choose eCommerce Solutions. At the bottom you open the section eCommerce Solutions and click on Shopify. In the Payment Processing section you open the link payment options in a new tab: you choose your own country you target. You will learn that Skrill supports Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club and iDeal. The implementation costs you about 2.5% + $ 0.25 per transaction.
Tip 14: Link domain
By default your store gets a web address as https: //myshopify.com/. That may be enough to test everything out, but if you want to tackle it professionally, then you must have your own domain name. If you do not have a (suitable) domain name yet, you can register it from Shopify.
Everything is then arranged almost automatically. Open the Domains section and click Buy domain at the top right. Enter the desired domain name and choose an extension (.com for example). You immediately read the annual costs. A .com domain costs you 9 dollars, so about 7 euros per year. If your domain name is still available, you will only need to follow the further instructions.
If you already have your own domain name, it is possible to link it to your webshop. Exactly how you approach that depends on the hosting party, but it usually means that you have to refer the CNAME and A record to Shopify.
